What you can afford,
and what it costs.
Two numbers nobody tells you until you are standing in the room: the rent that actually fits your salary, and the lump sum you need on day one. Including the brokerage you are not paying.

What you hand over on day one
The deposit default is the median across our own listings, not a guess — change it to whatever the place you are looking at asks for.
The ones worth asking first
How much of my salary should go on rent?
A widely used budgeting guideline puts rent at 25% to 30% of take-home pay, and this page uses that range. It is a convention rather than a rule: it says nothing about whether you are supporting family, repaying a loan, or living somewhere the commute costs more than the rent saved. Treat the number as a starting point to argue with, not a limit.
What does it cost to move into a PG in Delhi NCR?
Usually the first month's rent plus a security deposit. Across the PG Bazar listings that state a deposit, the median is about 1.7 months of rent — measured on 7 September 2026 across the 115 listings of 1,084 that carry both figures. So a ₹12,000 room is commonly about ₹32,400 to move into. Anything else is optional: a rent agreement, and movers if you have more than a suitcase.
Is there brokerage on PG Bazar?
No. There is no brokerage, finder's fee or commission on any listing, and there never has been. Brokers in NCR commonly ask a tenant for one month's rent, so on a ₹12,000 room that is ₹12,000 you keep. Listings carry the owner's own number and you contact them directly.
Is the deposit refundable?
A security deposit is meant to come back at the end of the stay, less anything genuinely owed for damage or unpaid bills. What that means in practice is whatever the agreement says, which is the reason to have one in writing before any money moves.
